Farm to Table: Our Sourcing Journey in Sri Lanka

2 min read

Walking Through the Spice Gardens

Our most recent sourcing trip took us deep into Sri Lanka's hill country, where the humid tropical climate creates perfect growing conditions for some of the world's finest spices.

The Cinnamon Peelers

In the village of Ambalangoda on Sri Lanka's southern coast, we met with a family of cinnamon peelers who have been practicing their craft for five generations. The skill required is remarkable — each worker strips the bark with practiced precision, rolling the delicate inner bark into the distinctive quills that eventually become cinnamon sticks.

Sustainable Farming Practices

What struck us most was the commitment to sustainability. Unlike large-scale monoculture operations, our partner farms use:

  • Intercropping — Growing multiple spice crops together
  • Natural pest management — No synthetic pesticides
  • Shade-growing — Maintaining forest canopy for biodiversity
  • Fair wages — Paying above market rates

Quality at the Source

We taste and test every batch at the farm before purchasing. This direct relationship means:

  1. Higher quality for our customers
  2. Better prices for farmers
  3. Complete traceability from farm to your kitchen
  4. No middlemen diluting or adulterating the product

Looking Forward

We're currently developing partnerships with pepper farmers in Kampot, Cambodia, and vanilla growers in Madagascar. Our goal is to build a network of trusted growers who share our commitment to quality and sustainability.

Every product in our store can be traced back to the farm where it was grown. We believe in complete transparency.
